This past Thursday evening, I shot another event at Congregation Beth Sholom in San Francisco. The San Francisco Ceremony to Honor the Forgotten Refugees was a program organized by JIMENA (Jews Indigenous to the Middle East and North Africa). JIMENA”s mission is

“to ensure that the accurate history of Mizrahi and Sephardic Jews is incorporated into mainstream Jewish and Middle Eastern narratives in order to create balance in attitudes, narratives, and discourse about Middle Eastern refugees and the modern Jewish experience.”

JIMENA co-founder and Iraqi native, Semha Alwaya, who spoke during the event at Beth Sholom, writes,

“I was born in Baghdad, and like most other Iraqis, my mother tongue is Arabic. My family’s cuisine, our mannerisms, our outlook, are all strongly influenced by our beste online casino synthesized Judeo-Arabic culture.”

Many Americans, Jewish and non-Jewish alike, know little or nothing of the complicated and fascinating history of Mizrahi and Sephardic Jews. Here”s hoping groups like JIMENA can help change that!

It was an interesting evening featuring some terrific musical performances as well as thoughtful remarks from various presenters.
